description abstractIntroduction
This Project Plan describes the top-level requirements and overall approach to be utilized by the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) for the Microgravity Science Glovebox (MSG) Project on the International Space Station (ISS).
The plan complies with the requirements of NPD 7120.4, "Program/Project Management"; NPG: 7120.5, "NASA Program and Project Management Processes and Requirements"; MPG 7120.4 "MSFC Program Management Council (PMC) Process"; SD40-OWI-008 "MSAD Project Management Process" and SSP 50431, "Space Station Program Requirements for Payloads". Changes to this document will be processed in accordance with the Microgravity Research Program policies.
Applicability
The MSG Project encompasses the design and development of the MSG facility and integration of investigations for flight on the ISS. The project includes development of the core facility and rack infrastructure, associated Ground Support Equipment (GSE) and operating software, assembly of the facility, integration of the MSG experiments into the facility, development of ancillary hardware, verification of the functionality and safety of the integrated configuration, operations of the MSG on-board ISS and sustaining engineering support.
The funding and schedule plans shown in this document reflect the requirements of the MSG Project activities as described above, including integration plus sustaining engineering support of the facility. The requirements and programmatics of potential follow-on facility applications and associated engineering or development efforts will be addressed as revisions to this project plan when the follow-on requirements are defined and baselined into the agency's materials research program.
Background
The MSG Facility was selected for installation and early operation on the ISS. The European Space Agency (ESA) developed the MSG facility in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and ESA, dated March 11, 1997 and March 18, 1997. Specific technical agreements are documented in the Joint Implementation Plan (JIP), SSP 50475.
