| description abstract | This commercial item description (CID) covers requirements for diesel-fired engine coolant preheaters, known hereinafter as preheaters. The purpose of a preheater is to preheat water-cooled diesel engines that are at ambient temperatures from −18 degrees Celsius (°C) to −46°C (0 degrees Fahrenheit (°F) to −50°F) so they can be started without damaging the engine. Preheaters bought in accordance with (IAW) this CID should not be used on systems with operational ether start. Type 1 and type 2 preheaters are recommended for engine displacements of up to 8 liters (L) (488 cubic inches (in1)); Type 3 preheaters are recommended for engine displacements of 9 to 12.5 L (549 to 763 in1). | |
