Standard Practice for Collection and Preparation of Coke Samples for Laboratory Analysis

ASTM D346-25

Organization:
ASTM - ASTM International
Year: 2025

Abstract: 4.1 This practice may be used to provide a representative sample of the coke from which it is collected. Because of the possible variability of coke and the wide variety of sampling equipment in use, caution must be exercised in all stages of sampling, from system specifications and equipment procurement to equipment acceptance testing and actually taking the final sample. It shall be noted from where the coke sample is collected and the degree of handling prior to being collected as coke can fracture upon successive handling from its initial removal from the coke oven due to the nature of the fissures that exists in the material. This fracturing can have a substantial impact on testing results for both material sizing and strength. 4.2 This practice also provides procedures for the preparation of an analysis sample of coke from the gross or divided sample. Data obtained from the analysis samples can be used in establishing price, determining acceptability for use in iron and steel industry processes, environmental impacts, as well as for other purposes. 4.3 In addition to complying with the requirements of ISO 13909-5, ISO 13909-6, ISO 13909-8 and ISO 18283, the Annex of this standard practice contains information that shall be considered mandatory. The information in this Annex is presented where it is specific to ASTM standard test methods or not otherwise covered in the governing ISO standards.

scope1.1 This practice covers procedures for the collection and preparation of representative samples of coke. These samples may be used for physical and chemical analyses. 1.2 Coke, especially run of oven furnace coke and foundry coke due to its large top size, can be a difficult material to sample. It is imperative that every sample be collected and handled carefully and in strict accordance with the standard procedures described herein and within the referenced standards. 1.3 The following ISO standards2 shall be the governing documents specifying requirements for the sampling and preparation of metallurgical coke: ISO 13909-5 Coal and coke — Mechanical sampling — Part 5: Coke — Sampling from moving streams ISO 13909-6 Coal and coke — Mechanical sampling — Part 6: Coke — Preparation of test samples ISO 13909-8 Coal and coke — Mechanical sampling — Part 8: Coke — Methods of testing for bias ISO 18283 Coal and coke — Manual sampling 1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
