| description abstract | This specification covers high energy nitramine gun propellant, Ex-100, for use in the 5"/62 Mk 45 Mod 4 Gun Weapons System (see 6.1). Intended Use: The propellant covered by this specification is intended for use in the 5-inch, 62-caliber gun system. The charge is the Extended Range Propelling Charge for firing the CARGO Discarding Rotating Banded Projectile. This propellant is military unique because it is used in Navy ship's gun ammunition only and has no commercial application. This is a detail specification because it deals with an explosive material for which safety considerations are paramount. Development and qualification of the explosive required years of testing and evaluation to ensure that the material's sensitivity to handling stimuli is not overly high, that the material exhibits adequate stability and sufficient safe life and that it is chemically compatible with the other components of the propelling charge with which it may come in contact. Deviations from this specification, especially in the ingredients and composition, could incur severe explosive hazards. | |
