KSC-STD-Z-0004 REV F CHANGE 1; STRUCTURAL DESIGN, STANDARD FOR
KSC - NASA - KSC - Kennedy Space Center
This standard establishes applicable definitions and general design requirements for structural design at the John F. Kennedy Space Center (KSC). This standard is applicable to the framing of both conventional and nonconventional structures, ground support equipment (GSE), and temporary structures and enclosures.
Intent. - With few exceptions, the nonconventional structures and equipment at KSC are subject to recurring modification due to the development of new requirements or improved launch processes and procedures. On a broader scale, the change from one launch vehicle system to another requires that outmoded structures be adapted where practical for use in the new system. This standard is intended to direct structural design effort into practices that will facilitate future, rapid, accurate response in providing for the needs of KSC. It is also intended to set forth other structural design methods that have proven to be particularly suitable at KSC and that are compatible with other design guidelines specified in KSC-DE-512-SM. Conventional structures shall be designed to current accepted industry practices.
Application. The current revision of this document shall be applicable to the design of all new structures and GSE. The revision of this document that was current at the time direction was issued to design, construct, manufacture, or procure the structure or GSE shall be applicable for the useful life of the hardware. Modifications of existing hardware may be done so the modified hardware complies with the revision that is current at the time directions are issued to modify the hardware except as noted otherwise. Detailed work orders, solicitations, statements of work, etc., prepared for architect and engineer (A&E) or other design services, shall cite this standard.
Measurement Units. This document contains values in both metric and inch-pound units. In many cases, the two values shown for the same criterion are not exact conversions of each other. The metric conversions are rounded, rational values that provide reasonable guidelines when working in metric units in the same manner as the inch-pound units provide guidelines for working in nonmetric units. Therefore, when performing design and analysis functions for metric projects, the metric values shown shall be used exclusively. Likewise, when performing design and analysis functions for nonmetric projects, the inch-pound values shown shall be used exclusively. The inch-pound values shall not be soft converted to metric for use on metric projects and vice versa.Intended Use: This standard is intended to establish uniform engineering practices and methods for the design of structural steel and other structures used at KSC for the receiving, handling, assembly, test, checkout, and launch of space vehicles and associated support structures.
KSC-STD-Z-0009 REV C W/AMD 1; CRYOGENIC GROUND SUPPORT EQUIPMENT, DESIGN OF, STANDARD FOR
KSC - NASA - KSC - Kennedy Space Center
This Standard establishes engineering principles for materials, processes, methods, practices, and designs to be applied to cryogenic ground support equipment (GSE) intended for installation and use at the John F. Kennedy Space Center (KSC). This standard is based primarily on the design experience gained during the Apollo and Shuttle programs by the Engineering Development Directorate (DE). The document will be updated as needed to reflect new designs and items not presently covered. This standard does not specially apply to cryogenic commodity equipment (mobile and portable support equipment).
Application. This standard applies to GSE used for handling liquid oxygen (LO2), liquid hydrogen (LH2), liquid nitrogen (LN2), and their respective vent gases. Liquid helium, liquid methane, and other cryogenic fluids are not specifically addressed in this document at this writing.
General. - All provisions and requirements of KSC-DE-512-SM shall be followed in the design of new equipment and in the modification of equipment designed in accordance with this standard. In the event of a conflict with the requirements of KSC-DE-512-SM, or any lower-level document, this standard shall take precedence.Intended Use: This document is intended to be used in the establishment of uniform engineering practices and methods and to ensure the inclusion of essential requirements in the design of cryogenic equipment used to support the servicing and launch of space vehicles and payloads at KSC. This standard defines the requirements for the design cryogenic GSE for handling LO2, LH2, or LN2 and does not constitute a specification for the procurement, fabrication, or installation of the system or elements. NOTICE. When Government drawings, specifications, or other data are used for any purpose other than in connection with a definitely related Government procurement operation, the United States Government thereby incurs no responsibility nor any obligation whatsoever; and the fact that the Government may have formulated, furnished, or in any way supplied the said drawings, specifications, or other data is not to be regarded by implication or otherwise as in any manner licensing the holder or any other person or corporation, or conveying any rights or permission to manufacturer, use, or sell any patented invention that may in any way be related thereto.
