description abstractINTRODUCTION
At the request of the Army Air Forces, Material Command, measurements were made of the pressures on the tail surfaces of the Republic Aviation Corporation P-47B airplane in the NACA full-scale tunnel. The pressures were measured over the horizontal and vertical tail surfaces for several airplane angles of attack and angles of yaw and with numerous control-surface deflections to provide a check on the design loads.
This report shows the distribution of the tail normal force between the fixed and the movable surfaces, the effects of yaw and rudder deflection on the normal forces on the horizontal tail surfaces, and the similar effects of angle of attack and elevator deflection on the vertical tail surfaces, some calculations have been made of the normal-force coefficient of the horizontal tail surface and the chordwise pressure distributions by means of existing empirical and theoretical knowledge for comparison with the experimental data. This paper was originally issued as a Memorandum Report for the Army Air Forces, Fe. 20, 1943
