description abstract	PURPOSE. The purpose of this Instruction is threefold: a. It provides general information and safety guidance to all Coast Guard employees about the hazards associated with lasers; b. It provides specific policy direction for the acquisition of lasers and the approval process for Class 3B lasers, Class 4 lasers and lasers that require an exemption from federal regulations; and c. It provides prescriptive guidance on the program elements required for each class of lasers.
