description abstractThis standard covers definitions, classifications, terminology, notation, and performance characteristics of relays for general switching purposes. It also includes military relays, relays for use in electronic circuits, relays for unusual environmental conditions, relays for airborne equipment, and solid state relays. Certain specialized forms of relays have their own sets of standards and are designated by other terms (for example, contactor). Specifically excluded from the scope of this standard are the following:
Choppers
Circuit breakers
Contactors
Relays for applications presently covered
Relays associated with electric power apparatus
Relays covered by NEMA Standards
Vibrators
Thermal relays
This standard covers only those terms and features peculiar to relays. Included are definitions for electromechanical, reed, solid state and hybrid relays. For terms common in electrical engineering or in general use, reference should be made to accepted standards such as dictionaries, or American National Standard C42 Series.
