Abstract: 4.1 Provisions of dimension stone handbooks, manuals, and specifications should be reviewed for compatibility with the principles outlined in this guide. 4.2 Related Components—Natural stone is only one component of a pavement's construction. All related materials and assemblies need to be evaluated for compatible interactive behavior with the stone. 4.3 Paving Design, Selection, and Installation—There are five primary aspects that should be considered for the design, selection, and installation of an exterior dimension stone paving system: stone type, setting system, joint material, substrates, and environment. The environment should consider anticipated loads, water management, and site-specific details. 4.4 Applicable Standards—Every stone application shall comply with applicable building codes and standards. 4.5 Stone Selection—The information presented in this guide is intended to focus on variables affecting the selection and use of dimension stone in exterior horizontal paving applications. Additional guidance on the selection of dimension stone is presented in Guide C1528/C1528M.
