Class 3 and class 4 potassium hydroxide solutions are used in submarine electrolytic oxygen generators. Use of potassium hydroxide solution contaminated with excessive particulate or organic matter in an electrolytic oxygen generator can lead to a fire or an explosion. Therefore, the purity requirements for class 3 and class 4 potassium hydroxide solutions exceed that of commercially available potassium hydroxide solution.
