description abstractPREFACE
This report contains key definitions of terms used in API surveys and reports such as the Weekly Statistical Bulletin.  Definitions for new products such as RFG and low and high sulfur distillate fuel have been incorporated.  In addition, a new section containing environmental terms such as chemical releases, oil spills and refinery residuals has been added to the report.
The definitions in this report were designed to provide a consistent basis for the reporting and interpretation of petroleum industry statistics.  They are not intended to meet definitional requirements for disciplines such as taxation, engineering and law.
To provide a broader understanding of some of the refinery aspects, the "Layman's Guide to a U.S. Refinery" is included.  This guide provides a general understanding of some of the terms used in refining operations.
This report was developed in 1966 by an ad hoc task group consisting of representatives of federal and state agencies and trade associations, and was reviewed and updated by the API's Committee on Supply and Consumption Statistics in 1995.
