| description abstract | This design criteria standard provides design requirements for digital fiber optic systems having data transmission rates not greater than 500 megabits per second (Mbps) installed aboard Navy surface ships and submarines. The proper application of component specifications and other fiber optic standards is addressed herein, as are detailed methods for calculating system design parameters, with examples. This standard practice concentrates on the design of a simple digital fiber optic link. It does not address general system design issues such as the terminal equipment design (except for cable entrance and routing constraints), the system topology and the physical design of the fiber optic cable plant. It is assumed that these decisions have been made and the information is used as input to the link design process. Furthermore, this document does not address the design of analog links, links using step index fiber and complex fiber optic links containing nonlinear fiber optic components such as fiber amplifiers. Intended Use: The design requirements contained in this standard are intended to be used for all applicable systems, to ensure system operability when fielded, interoperability between systems designed by different organizations, and proper operation when connected to the fiber optic cable topology. | |
