description abstractIntroduction
This procedure describes a method for determining the elongation and tensile strength of optical fiber cable jackets.
Methods are included for both non-bonded and bonded jackets. Methods for jackets with embedded strength members are also included in the test procedure. This procedure addresses both whole-jacket (tubular) specimens and cut-sample (dumbbell) specimens.
This procedure is similar to and draws from the methods specified in ASTM D 638, which is referenced by ASTM D 4565. The methods and attributes of this FOTP are those specific to optical fiber cables.
Note - Method 3021, “Tensile Strength, Insulation and Sheath”, and Method 3031, “Elongation, insulation and Sheath”, of FED STD 228 are essentially equivalent to the applicable subclauses of ASTM D 638, so the same similarity exists.
Many of the metric-English unit pairs are not absolutely equivalent. The dimensions shown are to rationalize testing using either metric units or English units. Only in cases where absolute equivalence is needed are the unit pairs mathematically equal. Applicable dimensions of the test specimens are either identical to or within the tolerance of those specified in ASTM D 638. In cases of dispute, the metric dimensions are primary.
