Abstract

2.1 In the realm of DEI, precise and shared understanding of terminology is foundational to creating a robust needs assessment. 2.2 Terms such as “diversity,” “equity,” and “inclusion” are complex and multifaceted, often varying in interpretation across organizations and individuals. 2.2.1 While the benefits for DEI work are clear, well-researched and proven, because the core terms are often misunderstood, the work can face a varied amount of organizational resistance. 2.2.2 Without a standardized vocabulary, conversations can lead to confusion or miscommunication. For example, “diversity” might be narrowly understood as representation of different racial or ethnic groups, whereas others might include broader categories like gender identity, age, or socioeconomic status. 2.2.3 Additionally, many terms have become polarized, leading to understandings rooted in various political and social ideologies as opposed to definitions of the words themselves. 2.3 Clear and comprehensive definitions of relevant terminology also allows organizations to focus on the terminology that is specific to their industry, defined within the context of that industry. 2.4 By prioritizing this step, organizations can create a needs assessment that is not only comprehensive but also impactful in advancing DEI goals.
