Abstract

Logistics as described in AAP-6, NATO Glossary of Terms and Definitions, is defined as: The science of planning and carrying out the movement and maintenance of forces. In its most comprehensive sense, logistics covers those aspects of military operations that deal with: <br>a. Design and development, acquisition, storage, transport, distribution, maintenance, evacuation and disposition of materiel, <br>b. Transport of personnel, <br>c. Acquisition or construction, maintenance, operation and disposition of facilities, <br>d. Acquisition or furnishing of services, e. Medical and health service support. <br>This definition of logistics encompasses the broad range of sustainment activity. It includes logistic management in peacetime as well as the logistic support of operations. Since this document primarily focuses on the operational level logistic support of operations, activities such as design, development, construction, acquisition and disposition of equipment and facilities are only addressed indirectly in this document, namely only if and insofar as these activities play a role during operations. This document therefore focuses on supply, transport, movement co-ordination, maintenance, medical support and furnishing of services, and also provides guidance and linkage to other functional areas that impact significantly on the support of operations, such as funding, contracting, infrastructure engineering and real estate management.
