description abstractPURPOSE
All pressure vessel/systems (PV/S) shall be certified as safe to operate, from a pressure viewpoint, before use and shall be recertified periodically after initial certification in accordance with the requirements of NASA Management Instruction (NMI) 1710.3, Design, Inspection, and Certification of Pressure Vessels and Pressurized Systems, and JSC Instruction (JSCI) 1710.1, Design, Inspection, and Certification of Pressure Vessels and Pressurized Systems. This handbook provides implementation instructions to satisfy these requirements at JSC.
Certification is not a single step but a series of steps that must be performed in order to assure that a PV/S is safe to operate. This handbook discusses these steps in the logical sequence in which they should be performed. See figure 1-1 for a flow chart of steps necessary to achieve certification.
APPLICABILITY
The provisions of this instruction apply to all ground-based PV/S, both new and existing, which are owned and/or operated by JSC and all PV/S which are used on JSC property. PV/S which are an integral part of NASA-owned or operated aircraft and are covered by Air Force technical orders are exempt from the requirements of this handbook.
