Abstract: GENERAL DEFINITIONS
Departmental Standardization Office (DepSO). A top level office in each Military Department or Defense Agency responsible for managing the Defense Standardization Program and ensuring that its Lead Standardization Activities and Standardization Management Activities properly implement the policies, procedures, and goals of the Defense Standardization Program.
FSG, FSC, and Area Codes. Federal Supply Group (FSG), Federal Supply Class (FSC), and Standardization Area codes. For a more complete description of FSGs and FSCs, see Cataloging Handbook H2-1, Federal Supply Classification, Part 1, Groups and Classes.
Item Reduction Activity. An activity responsible for conducting item reduction studies in accordance with DoD 4120.24-M.
Lead Standardization Activity (LSA). The activity responsible for managing DoD standardization efforts in an Area or Federal Supply Class.
Non-Government Standards Body. A private sector association, organization, or technical society that plans, develops, establishes, maintains, or coordinates private sector standards, specifications, and other types of standardization documents.
Participating Activity. The activity designated by its DepSO to represent the department in interdepartmental standardization efforts.
Standardization Area. A standardization category that encompasses a broad engineering discipline, practice, and manufacturing technology and is not susceptible to categorizing in the Federal Supply Classification system.
