Optical Characteristics of Cathode Ray Tube Screens - Includes Access to Additional Content

Abstract: INTRODUCTION
This publication is comprised of two parts: general information on phosphors, and registered data on individual screens. It is intended to serve two groups of people: phosphor and CRT manufacturers interested in registering new phosphors and end users of CRT's interested in determining what screen type is most suitable for an application. In addition to the "hard copy" presentation of the general information and the registered data, the data is also presented on computer diskette for handy reference use. The following information pertains to the use of the diskette.
1. FILE NAME WWPHO123.WKl
2. The data is formatted using MS DOS %o be used with IBM Compatible type personal computers.
3. Any program able to read .WK1 programs should accept this format. However, this file was written using Lotus 123.
End users should be warned that checking published data on a phosphor is only the first step in evaluating a phosphor for ergonomic criterion. A screen type must be tested by a variety of viewers under conditions similar to what the end user will see to ensure there are no ergonomic problems, Flicker is the most intractable problem associated with CRT screens. While published persistence data will serve as a guide to flicker, persistence is not the only factor, nor even necessarily the primary one, in determining whether flicker will be perceived.
Test methods in publication TEP-105 should be used whenever possible for generating data for new registrations. Phosphor and CRT manufacturers are also urged to re-measure data on old registered phosphors and submit this new data to be published along with the old data for comparison in future editions of this publication.
