MATERIALS SCIENCE RESEARCH RACK (MSRR-1) DATA MANAGEMENT PLAN
Organization:
MSFC - NASA - MSFC - Marshall Space Flight Center
Year: 2004
Abstract: The first Materials Science Research Rack (MSRR-1) is a modular facility for materials science research in the microgravity environment of the International Space Station (ISS). The MSRR-1 is the top-level Configuration Item (CI) consisting of the element Hardware Configuration Item (HWCI). The MSRR-1 consists of a second level MSFC Experiment Carrier (EC), a European Space Agency (ESA) Experiment Module (EM), a Space Product Development (SPD) EM and future replaceable Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) EMs.
This plan describes the philosophy, system characteristics, and procedures for implementing the Data Management (DM) function for the entire MSRR-1 facility, but does not go beyond to the inserts or Sample Ampoule Cartridge Assembly (SACAs.) As used in this plan, the definition of data is any and all information required to substantiate the management and technical performance, cost performance, and schedule performance of all the MSRR-1 Project elements required to deliver science hardware and software and support equipment/spares to the intended mission manifest. MSRR-1 data can be in the form of documents or other media and as such, is an integral part of all technical and administrative functions essential to the successful accomplishment of MSRR-1 Project objectives. The use of DM ensures completeness, accuracy, and compliance of all data. The discipline of DM also includes the storage, retrieval, tracking, distribution, and administration of data, and is administered through the use of policies, procedures, specifications, and standards. MSRR-1 DM functions are as follows:
• Coordinate definition of data requirements and analysis
• Maintenance of data requirements
• Coordinate change control of data requirements
• Data controls and transmittals
• Data schedules and reports
• Data storage and retrieval
• Develop catalog library and tracking database
This MSRR-1 Data Management Plan (DMP) defines the processes that are used to track and status controls, for the handling of in-house and contractor data. The purpose of this DMP is to define the policies, procedures, specifications, and standards that govern the processes to be used by the MSRR-1 Data Manager, Project elements, and Center organizational elements in the implementation of the DM system. The detailed operations in this plan are in compliance with MSFC Work Instruction MWI 7120.5, Data Management Plans, Programs/Projects.
