NATO NATO PARTS
Standardization in NATO of ACSM (Assemblies, Components, Spare Parts and Materials) - AMD 0
Organization:
NATO - North Atlantic Treaty Organization
Year:
Abstract: This Group's overall purpose is to utilise materiel standardization to enhance NATO's military capability by the wider use of standard components in military equipments. This policy will open a wider procurement market; will reduce the proliferation of spare parts; and, through the adoption of proven products, will provide the means to improve the reliability and availability of equipments in service - all at reduced overall cost. In the long term, the aim involves incorporating standard components in the design of new equipment. In the shorter term, effort is concentrated on facilitating both interoperability of equipments used by NATO nations and the various degrees of cross-servicing through the use of standard interfaces or special adaptors.
The primary function of AC/301 is thus to develop a policy and programme for the standardization of ACSM within NATO. Accordingly the Group co-operates with all NATO bodies concerned with materiel standardization, determines the need for ACSM standards and relates this in a co- manner to the available international standards suitable for adoption by NATO.
The main Group consists of senior national representatives responsible for materiel standardization or its co-ordination within their national Ministries of Defence. The Chairman, who is elected by the members, is currently the Director of Standardization MOD (UK). Secretarial support is provided by Materiel Management Systems Section of the Defence Support Division of NATO.
