ASME B31J

English -- Stress Intensification Factors (i-Factors), Flexibility Factors (k-Factors), and Their Determination for Metallic Piping Components

Organization:
ASME - ASME International
Year: 2017

Abstract: Scope: General The ASME B31 Code for Pressure Piping and the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section III, Nuclear Components, Subsections NC and ND piping rules require the use of stress intensification factors (SIFs or i-factors) and flexibility factors (k-factors) when checking the adequacy of components and joints (welded and nonwelded) in piping subject to various loads, including cyclic loads, that may produce fatigue failures. As used herein, where the word Code is used without specific identification, it means the Code that incorporates or references this Standard. Experimental methods to determine SIFs, flexibility factors, and sustained load factors are provided in the Nonmandatory Appendices. Compiled stress intensification and flexibility factor equations for common piping components are included in Table 1-1; see also Tables 1-2 and 1-3 and Figures 1-1 through 1-7.
