CHIPBOARD

Abstract: This commercial item description covers Chipboard used for general protection and packaging where strength and appearance are not essential.
A. Material. Chipboard shall be prepared by processing materials to insure compliance with the requirements of this description. The chipboard shall be plain and shall not be coated or lined. Two or more plies can be combined.
B. Form and size. Chipboard shall be furnished in sheet form which shall be cut to the size specified. The tolerance for the width and length dimensions shall be minus zero and plus 6.35 mm (¼ inch). Unless otherwise specified, the size shall be one of the following: 21.59 cm × 27.94 cm (8-½" × 11"); 25.4 cm × 28.58 cm (10" × 11-¼"); 66.04 cm × 96.52 cm (26" × 38"); 121.92 cm × 121.92 cm (48" × 48")
C. Color. The color shall be natural and may have variations in shade.
D. Thickness. The thickness shall be as specified (see table I) with a tolerance of plus or minus 0.076 mm (0.003") when tested in accordance with TAPPI T 411. Beneficial comments, recommendations, additions, deletions, clarifications, etc. and any data which may improve this document should be sent to the General Services Administration Federal Supply Service, Engineering Branch, 26 Federal Plaza New York, N.Y. 10278.
E. Basis weight. The basis weight of chipboard shall be as specified (see table I) with a tolerance of plus or minus 5 percent when tested in accordance with TAPPI T 410. TABLE I. Physical requirements
F. Workmanship. Chipboard shall be free fom surface lumps, clip indentations, wrinkles, cracks, breaks, blows, blisters, split edges, soil and mechanical imperfections or any other defects which may impair its serviceability or appearance.
The contractor must certify that the product offered shall include a minimum of 80 % post-consumer recovered material as defined in 40 CFR, Part 250. The Government reserves the right to require proof of such conformance prior to first delivery and thereafter as may be otherwise provided for under the provisions of the contract.
Responsibility for Inspection - Unless otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order, the supplier is responsible for the performance of all inspection requirements as specified herein. Except as otherwise specified, the supplier may utilize his own facilities or any commercial laboratory acceptable to the government. The Government reserves the right to perform any of the inspections set forth herein, where such inspections are deemed necessary to assure that supplies and services conform to the prescribed requirements.
Each lot of sheets shall be inspected for conformance to the requirements herein. Inspection shall be in accordance with MIL-STD-105 using the sampling plans specified below.
A. Visual characteristics - Inspection level S-4 with an Acceptable Quality level (AQL) of 4.0 percent defective. The sample unit shall be one sheet.
B. Dimensional characteristics - Inspection level S-4 with an Acceptable Quality level (AQL) of 4.0 percent defective. The sample unit shall be one sheet.
C. TAPPI tests shall be in accordance with TAPPI T 400 for the applicable TAPPI test method.
D. Packaging, Packing, Labeling and Marking - Inspection level S-2 with an AQL of 4.0 percent defective. The sample unit shall be one fully prepared shipping container.
Packaging, Packing, Labeling, and Marking shall be as specified in the contract or purchase order.
Purchasers should reference this commercial item description when ordering and state their requirements for a) size b) thickness c) packaging, packing, labeling, and marking.
