LASER SAFETY

Abstract: PURPOSE
The purpose of this Marshall Policy Directive (MPD) is to provide policy for personnel protection from hazards caused by laser operations.
APPLICABILITY
This MPD applies to the personnel, programs, projects, and activities at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) and MSFC's Michoud Assembly Facility, including contractors and resident agencies to the extent specified in their respective contracts or agreements. ("Contractors," for purposes of this paragraph, include contractors, grantees, Cooperative Agreement recipients, Space Act Agreement partners, or other agreement parties.)
This MPD does not apply to bar code readers, laser printers, laser optical disc readers (CD ROMS), or any other system with a laser device which is enclosed as an integral part of the system. These are categorized as Class 1 or Exempt (see definition). Laser pointers are also exempt from this MPD, but safe practices shall be exercised when using these devices.
