NACA-TN-2340

A survey of methods for determining stability parameters of an airplane from dynamic flight measurements

Organization:
NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
Year: 1951

Abstract: Various methods of reducing to stability parameter form the response to sinusoidal and transient disturbances are discussed, using the simplified longitudinal motion of an idealized airplane as an illustrative example. It is shown that there are basic limitations in the determination of some of the stability derivatives as compared with the transfer-function coefficients, which are certain combinations of stability derivatives directly related to the airplane response. Hence, most of the report is concerned with methods of determining transfer-function coefficients rather than stability derivatives.
