Abstract

<strong>Object</strong> <br>To define terms used in the environmental testing of specimens of electrotechnical products, such as components, sub-assemblies, assemblies and equipments. <br>The environmental conditions for which provision is made include shock and vibration, climatic (temperature, humidity and air pressure), sealing (against ingress of solids, liquids and gasses or to maintain a pressure difference), soldering heat (including thermal shock from soldering). <br>Terms for fire hazard testing are not included as they are to form a part of IEC 695. The following conditions have not been considered : solar radiation, mould growth, corrosion, robustness of terminations, durability of marking, dust, sand and rain, nuclear radiation, acoustically induced vibration. <br>NOTES <br>1 The scope of IEC 68 is in clause 2 of IEC68-1. In other standards of IEC 68, clause 1 is termed the "object" clause and serves the purpose of object and field of application. <br>2 This guide uses, in principle, existing terms and definitions from IEC 68 listed according to a classification of environmental conditions that is not that of IEC 721 but is better suited to the needs of IEC 68-2 test methods. <br>3 Some definitions from specialized vocabularies, for example from IS0 2041 and IEC 721-1, have been included where there is no definition in IEC 68. This standard identifies the relation between the definitions given and those other sources.
