description abstractExcept for cover plated beams, the evaluation procedures apply to uncracked steel members subjected to primary stresses. The procedures do not apply to members that have sustained severe corrosion or mechanical damage or that have been repaired after sustaining fatigue cracking. NCHRP Report 299 gives information and references on the fatigue behavior of such members with fatigue prone details and on the possibility of fatigue due to secondary bending stresses that are not normally calculated.
Cover plated beams with existing fatigue cracks at the ends of the cover plates may be retrofitted as discussed in Article 4.6 if the bridge is to remain in service.
