Thermal Environment around Strong Heat Source with Single-Sided Natural Ventilation

Abstract: INTRODUCTION
It is common that a SHS exists in the workshop of electric power or metallurgical industries. The heat emitted by the SHS has greatly influenced the indoor thermal environment and workers' health and thus directly relates to work efficiency. The steel rolling workshop typically represents this kind of workshops. A cold rolling workshop of one steel factory in Shanghai, China, has been used to research surrounding thermal environment of the working area. The rolling furnace did not cover a broad area and yet was more than the half of the total height of the workshop high. Around the furnace wall there are footpaths for regular operation and examination. A workshop is next to the cold rolling workshop on one side, so only the windows on the other side could be open. So here comes the problem: if we choose natural ventilation as our venting pattern, the single-sided natural ventilation would serve as the only way. Thus the heat released by the furnace would bring about many negative effects on the indoor environment. In this case, under single-sided natural ventilation, issues, such as how the SHS will work on the surrounding environment and what the characteristics of the air distribution are, should be resolved. This paper primarily discusses these problems, based on the test model studies, where the singlesided natural ventilation is motivated by thermal pressure differences.
