NATO ATP-52(B)

Abstract

ATP-52(B) sets out the wide range of tasks that are to be carried out by engineers at the tactical level including command and control responsibilities across the operational spectrum. Although intended to be a single service publication, the reality is that land based engineers have a key role in support of the Maritime and Air components. Whilst remaining focused on the Land component, this document also considers the way in which engineers provide support to a Joint, Inter-agency and Multinational Force in accordance with the key principles established in AJP-3.12. <br>The term engineer and engineering have a variety of meanings. This document is concerned with military engineering which refers to those activities which shape the physical environment for the benefit of any Joint Force component. Definitions are addressed in more detail in chapter 1. <br><strong><u>AIM</u></strong> <br>The aim of this publication is to set out the role, principles of employment and command and control of engineers in NATO armies, reflecting the changed operational environment and evolving NATO doctrine, particularly AJP 3.12, Joint Engineering. ATP-52(B) is intended for engineer and tactical commanders as well as general staff officers and unit commanders of other branches. An understanding of this publication will enable them to realise the wide range of engineer capabilities available and thereby ensure the optimum use of engineer manpower and resources, which are typically scarce.
