NFPA 76

Standard for the Fire Protection of Telecommunications Facilities - Effective Date: 1/2/2012

Organization:
NFPA - (NFPA) - National Fluid Power Association
Year: 2012

Abstract: This standard provides requirements for fire protection of telecommunications facilities where telecommunications services such as telephone (landline, wireless) transmission, data transmission, internet transmission, voice-over internet protocol (VoIP) transmission, and video transmission are rendered to the public.
Telecommunications facilities include signal-processing equipment areas, cable entrance facility areas, power areas, main distribution frame areas, standby engine areas, technical support areas, administrative areas, and building services and support areas occupied by a telecommunications service provider.
* This standard specifically excludes telecommunications facilities with less than 46.5 m2 (500 ft2) of signal-processing equipment areas.
Purpose. The purpose of this standard is to provide a reasonable level of fire protection in telecommunications facilities, to provide a reasonable level of life safety for the occupants, and to protect the telecommunications equipment and service continuity.
This standard is intended to avoid requirements that could involve unnecessary complications for or interference with the normal use, occupancy, and operations of telecommunications facilities and equipment.
* This standard provides a means by which the industry's accepted fire safety methods are applied to continue the historically good fire safety record of these facilities.
