NACA-TN-2440

Wind-tunnel investigation and analysis of the effects of end plates on the aerodynamic characteristics of an unswept wing

Organization:
NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
Year: 1951

Abstract: A wind-tunnel investigation has been conducted to determine the effects of end plates of various areas and shapes on the aerodynamic characteristics of an unswept and untapered wing of aspect ratio 4.
The results were in agreement with those previous investigations in that the end plates provided the basic wing with an increase in the lift-curve slope, a reduction in the induced drag, and an increase in the maximum lift coefficient. Negligible variations were obtained in the pitching moment when the end plates were added. A reduction of the experimental data, in which the end-plate effect was expressed in terms of an effective aspect ratio, was in fair agreement with the classical theory for evaluating the end-plate effects on the lift-curve slope and induced drag.
