Lessons Learned – Verify Sound Suppression Piping Is Pre-Filled To Lowest Nozzles Prior To Tank Fill

Abstract: Abstract:
For the Space Shuttle Program, a Sound Suppression Water System was installed on the launch pads to protect the orbiter and its payloads from damage by acoustical energy and rocket exhaust reflected from the flame trench and Mobile Launcher Platform during launch. Filling the Sound Suppression Water System's tank and riser, and prefilling its lines, can normally be done in less than 2 hours (not including time for relocation of technicians). However, if the piping were completely drained (e.g., for a valve inspection or inspection of the internal piping), filling the lines, tank, and riser would take about 8 hours. A launch can be delayed if the schedule does not account for this extra time for filling.
