Lessons Learned – Cracks in the Body of Dual Inline Package (DIP) Components in the ASTROS Star Tracker Electronic Assembly

Organization:
NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
Year: 1993

Abstract: Abstract:
Functional testing of the ASTROS Star Tracker Electronic Assembly revealed a hairline crack that appeared to have been caused by lead bending tools used to form the part leads for installation. The tooling had been previously used successfully on this part type but a different lot number. Part types requiring mechanical lead forming should have approved procedures and qualified processes with adequate sample testing prior to forming component leads for installation into flight hardware.
