MIL-STD-2402
MAPPING, CHARTING, AND GEODESY SYMBOLS FOR GRAPHIC PRODUCTS
Year: 1995
Abstract: This standard defines Mapping, Charting, and Geodesy (MC&G) symbology for the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) graphic (hardcopy) products. This is one of two-military standards that document symbology for DMA products. Symbology associated with DMA Vector Products (those in Vector Product Format), are found in MIL-STD-2412, Vector Product Format Symbology.
The purpose of this standard is to assure uniformity of treatment among mapping and charting elements, primarily DMA and its contractors, engaged in a coordinated production and maintenance program for hardcopy product covered by this standard. Feature requirements are mapped to specific symbols using DMA's Feature/Attribute Coding Standard (FACS), to maintain consistency between various DMA production methods. The use of FACS in this document is not intended to imply any external digital data coding standard. FACS is the internal coding standard used by DMA's Digital Production System (DPS), which is the primary intended, but not exclusive, method for production for numerous DMA hardcopy products. The Digital Geographic Information Exchange Standard (DIGEST) Feature Attribute Coding Catalog (FACC), not FACS, is the approved coding standard for the exchange of digital geographic data, as well as the standard for DMA's Vector Product Format product line.
This standard applies to both internal and contractual development efforts by the Defense Mapping Agency; and to all levels involved in the preparation and maintenance of those graphic MC&G products covered by this standard (see 4.5).
This Military Standard is UNCLASSIFIED. The symbology and technical specifications presented herein may be used for classified graphic products where appropriate security provisions are added. Intended Use: This standard contains requirements for portrayal of MC&G symbols on DMA graphic (hardcopy) products. It is primarily intended for DMA and its contractors for production of maps, charts, and other graphic products. It is not intended as an explanation of symbology to the users of DMA's MC&G products. This information is normally provided to users by other means, such as a legend on the map, or by a separate symbol book, such as the US Chart No. 1 for nautical products. The symbols have been designed with a resolution commensurate with lithographic printing, and may not be suitable for digital displays on CRT screens. In addition, the FACS coding used in this standard is consistent with DMA internal production methods, rather than with the Digital Geographic Information Exchange Standard (DIGEST) Feature Attribute Coding Catalog (FACC), which is the approved coding standard for digital data, including DMA Vector Product Format (VPF) products. For symbols for digital (VPF) products, see MIL-STD-2412, and MIL-V-89045, Vector Product Format Symbology.
