NACA-TN-3705

An investigation of forward-located fixed spoilers and deflectors as gust alleviators on an unswept-wing model

Organization:
NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
Year: 1956

Abstract: An investigation was made in the Langley 300 MPH 7- by 10-foot tunnel and the Langley gust tunnel to determine the static longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics and the gust-alleviation capabilities of forward-located (at 12 percent chord) fixed spoilers, deflectors, or a spoiler-deflector combination on a simulated transport airplane model having an unswept wing.
The lift-curve slopes are fairly linear and are substantially reduced by the addition of either the spoiler or deflector configuration; however, the lift-curve slope was nonlinear for the spoiler-deflector combination. Extending the deflectors necessitates only small changes in attitude and trim in order to maintain a given lift coefficient, whereas extending the spoiler or the spoiler-deflector combination requires large changes.
