ENCODERS, SHAFT POSITION TO DIGITAL, CONTACT TYPE, ALTITUDE REPORTING; GENERAL SPECIFICATION FOR
Organization:
NAVY - AS - Naval Air Systems Command
Year: 1968
Abstract: This specification covers the requirements for a contact type altitude reporting encoder.
The nomenclature shall consist of the item name, followed by a type designation (see Table I). TABLE I NOMENCLATURE
In all cases the item shall be "Encoder, Shaft Position to Digital, Contact Type, Altitude Reporting."
The first two digits of the type designation shall indicate the maximum diameter of the encoder in tenths of an inch. If the maximum diameter is not a whole number of tenths, the next higher tenth shall be used.
The direction of shaft rotation for increasing count, as viewed from the shaft end of the encoder, is denoted by the following symbols:
Clockwise rotation - CW
Counterclockwise rotation - CC
The capacity of the encoder shall be designated by a four digit number, following the size, indicating the maximum design altitude of the encoder in hundreds of feet.
Whether the contact selection is accomplished internally or externally shall be designated by one letter as follows:
Internal Logic - I
External Logic - E
The resolution of the encoder shall be designated by a two digit number to indicate the number of discrete counts in hundreds per 360° of the input shaft.
The lower case letter "a" following the resolution designation indicates the original or basic issue of an encoder type. Subsequent modifications which affect interchangeability are designated by succeeding letters in the lower case alphabet except that "i", "l", and "o" shall not be used.
An encoder bearing the type designation 11CC1267I80a. is one with the following characteristics:
Size - More than 1.00 inches but not more than 1.10 inches. (11)
Rotation - Counterclockwise as viewed from the shaft extension end for increasing count (CC)
Capacity - 126, 700 feet (1267)
Logic - internal (I)
Resolution - 8000 feet per turn (80)
Modification - original issue (a)
Intended Use: The encoders covered by this specification are for use in altitude reporting systems where it is necessary to convert analog data to digital form for display or computation.
The nomenclature shall consist of the item name, followed by a type designation (see Table I). TABLE I NOMENCLATURE
