Lessons Learned - Enhanced Fuel Cell Repair Capability at KSC
Year: 2010
Abstract: When fuel cell power plants (FCPs) were developed for the Space Shuttle, KSC had minimal capability to repair them. As a result, even FCPs needing only minor repairs had to be returned to the vendor for repair. In the future, FCPs should be designed to maximize the use of modular components and other features that would allow a significant portion of necessary repair work (including component replacement) to be performed at KSC. This would include components in the accessory section and single cells or fuel cell stacks. Performing these repairs at KSC would eliminate the need to send entire power plants back to the vendor. KSC could save time and money by using modular FCPs that KSC workers can repair.
